In the spiritual life, courage isn’t just a personality trait—it’s a command. From the desert of Sinai to the shores of Galilee, the most frequent instruction given to humanity is: “Do not be afraid.”
When we play it small, we aren’t just being “humble”; we are often letting fear dictate our steps instead of faith. Here are five reasons why you are called to be courageous.
1. You Carry the Spirit of Power
Courage is your spiritual inheritance. We often feel timid because we rely solely on our own strength, but the Word reminds us that our internal “operating system” is built for boldness.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7
When you choose courage, you are simply aligning yourself with the Spirit that already lives within you. Every child of God needs to manifest courage when opposed with uncertainties, trouble or unpleasant situation.
2. Strength is Forged in the knowledge of God’s Presence
The reason we can be brave isn’t because the giant is small, but because the One standing behind us is immense. Courage is the natural byproduct of realizing you are never navigating a crisis in isolation.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9
Courage is born out of our conscious awareness of God with us by the HolySpirit.
3. Your Purpose Requires Action
Faith is not a stagnant emotion; it is a verb. Scriptural history is a catalog of people who had to step into the water before it parted. If you wait for the path to be perfectly clear before you move, you might never leave the shore.
Noah built before the rain.
David ran toward the giant while others hid.
Esther entered the king’s court at the risk of her life.
Your calling is on the other side of your “yes.” Sometimes, you see God in action as you begin to act in courageous faith in what he has promised. Mark 16:20 tells us
“And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.” Notice how they went first before Jesus God manifested.
Sometimes Christians think they are following God by not taking certain actions of the faith, when behind the scene, it’s all fear keeping them from advancing. This doesn’t mean God cannot keep us waiting in certain seasons of our lives, the main point is that we should always know when it is God and when it’s not God. One way to know is by the peace that always comes with God’s instructions to you.
4. Fear is a Thief of Fruitfulness
In the Parable of the Talents, the servant who was “afraid” went and hid his treasure in the ground. Fear led to stagnation, and stagnation led to a wasted life. Be bold in the thing God has said to you. Be bold in the Word that God has given to you. Be bold to take steps and increase. Don’t be like that servant’ who said “I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground…” — Matthew 25:25
Courage is the key that unlocks your gifts. To be “fruitful” requires the bravery to plant seeds in uncertain soil. Peter won’t have been able to preach to that crowd on the day of Pentecost if he was fearful. He would have missed the opportunity to glorify God in that place. Always, our fears hinders God’s glory in our life.
5. Perfect Love Casts Out Fear
At its core, cowardice is often a preoccupation with self—worrying about our reputation, our safety, or our comfort. Scriptural courage is fueled by something higher: Love. When you love your mission, your family, or your community more than you love your own comfort, fear loses its grip.
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear…” — 1 John 4:18
Courage doesn’t mean you don’t feel the tremor in your hands; it means you keep walking anyway because you trust the One who called you. You were not created to live in a spirit of retreat. You were created to take ground.
I want you to say a word of prayer now against every spirit of fear. Say “Lord from today, I begin to act in courage that all your purpose and plan for my life be fulfilled in Jesus name”.
