You may still be going to church. Still singing the songs. But inside, something is dying. This is a wake-up call.
— 1 Peter 5:8
Here are five things that silently drain the life out of your relationship with Jesus — and what to do about each one.
The First Killer:
Prayerlessness — A Slow Disconnect from God
It rarely happens overnight. First you skip your morning devotion because you’re in a hurry. Then you tell yourself you’ll pray later. Later never comes. Days pass. Then weeks. And before long, the voice of God that once felt so clear becomes distant — not because God moved, but because you stopped showing up.
Jesus, though He was the Son of God, never stopped praying. If He needed it, how much more do we? Restore the altar of prayer in your life — even if you start with just five minutes a day. The fire comes back through prayer.
— Luke 18:1
The Second Killer:
Neglecting the Word — Starving Your Spirit
Many Christians today feed their minds with hours of social media, television, and entertainment — but struggle to spend ten minutes in scripture. The result is a church full of people who know the lyrics to the latest songs but cannot stand on the Word when trials come.
Make a decision today to return to daily scripture reading. Let the Word wash your mind, correct your thinking, and strengthen your faith. The Word is your spiritual food — and you cannot thrive without eating.
— Psalm 119:105
The Third Killer:
Wrong Friendships — The Company That Pulls You Down
Wrong friendships rarely announce their danger openly. They start innocently — a friend who doesn’t share your faith, a group that mocks spiritual things, a relationship that always pulls you toward compromise. Over time, you find yourself laughing at things you once found offensive, skipping church without guilt, and slowly adopting the mindset of the world.
This is not a call to stop loving unbelievers — Jesus ate with sinners. But there is a difference between being a light in darkness and being swallowed by it. Guard your inner circle. Surround yourself with people who sharpen you, challenge you, and point you back to Jesus.
— 1 Corinthians 15:33
The Fourth Killer:
Unconfessed Sin — The Weight That Blocks Your Growth
Many Christians carry the weight of secret sin for years — habits they are ashamed of, bitterness they have never surrendered, unforgiveness buried under religious activity. They attend church, serve in ministry, and sing worship songs, yet deep inside there is a knowing that something is wrong. That is the Holy Spirit convicting — not to condemn, but to restore.
The good news is that God’s mercy is greater than any sin. Come to Him honestly. Confess, repent, and receive the forgiveness that Jesus died to give you. There is no sin too great for the blood of Jesus to cover.
— 1 John 1:9
The Fifth Killer:
Spiritual Isolation — Trying to Walk Alone
It often begins with small excuses — you’re too busy, the church hurt you, you can worship God at home. And while home worship is good, it cannot replace the life that flows from genuine fellowship. A coal separated from the fire grows cold on its own. The same is true for the believer who isolates from the body of Christ.
If you have been hurt by the church, find healing — but do not let the wound become a reason to abandon God’s design for your life. Find a Bible-believing, Spirit-filled community and commit to it. Be known. Be accountable. You were never meant to do this alone.
— Hebrews 10:25
The Fire Can Burn Again 🔥
If you recognized yourself in any of these five points, do not be discouraged — be awakened. The fact that you can sense the drift means the Holy Spirit is still reaching for you. God has not given up on you. He is calling you back.
Return to prayer. Return to the Word. Guard your relationships. Confess what you have been hiding. Reconnect with the body of Christ. These are not complicated steps — they are the simple foundations of a life fully alive in God.
Your Christian life does not have to die slowly. It can burn brighter than it ever has — starting today.
