Overcoming Masturbation: A better guide for Christian Youth

The struggle with masturbation and pornography is one of the most common “hidden” battles in the Church today. For the Christian, the goal isn’t just “quitting a habit”—it’s about reclaiming our dignity as people made in the image of God. Masturbation is a wicked sin because it denies its victim God’s purposes and plans. Its purpose is to keep its  victim down and cause stagnation in destiny and marital relationship.

Masturbation is pioneered by spirits and spirit needs our compliance to function. Just as God is interested in us, these spirits have been assigned to mocked the temple of God (our bodies) 1Cor.3:16, but by the grace of God I believe we will stand with God on this matter.

1. Change Your Perspective on Your Body

The world tells us our bodies are just playgrounds for our impulses. However, the Bible offers a much higher view. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, we are reminded:

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit… You are not your own; you were bought at a price.”

Jesus didn’t just die for your soul; He died for your physical body, too. When we realize our bodies are “temples,” we start to see that sexual purity isn’t about God trying to take away our fun—it’s about God trying to protect something sacred. It is God protecting HIS vessel.

2. Radical Measures (The “Matthew 5” Principle)

Jesus was very practical about how to handle temptation. In Matthew 5:29-30, He used strong language, saying that if your eye causes you to sin, “gouge it out,” and if your hand causes you to sin, “cut it off.”

Obviously, Jesus wasn’t calling for self-mutilation. He was calling for radical boundaries. To overcome this, you have to look at the things that trigger the sin:

  • Is it scrolling through social media late at night in bed? Leave the phone in another room.

  • Is it boredom or stress? Find a healthy activity like exercise or a hobby.

  • Is it specific apps? Delete them or use blockers.

  • Is it watching certain kind or movies or listening to certain kinds of music? delete them.

Overcoming masturbation requires more than “willpower”; it requires changing your environment, relationship etc. This is the place where you should be willing and intentional. This is the time we allow his love to flow through us.

“We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

You should know that our minds can never be alone, it is always ruminating. So to control it, give it a thing to think about. This is why the scripture taught us some ways to control our mind in Phillipians 4:8,

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Phillipians 4:8

3. Focus on the “Better Delight”

You cannot beat a desire simply by saying “no.” You have to replace it with a bigger “yes.”

In John 15, Jesus talks about “abiding in the vine.” When we are truly connected to Him, we start to find a satisfaction that lust can’t provide. Masturbation is often an attempt to soothe a lonely or stressed heart. Jesus offers a peace that actually heals that loneliness.

Instead of just focusing on not sinning, focus on seeking Him. Spend time in the Word and prayer, not as a chore, but as a way to fill the void that lust is trying to fill. Our mind is like the computer, what you put in it stays as its consciousness. To destroy a though, you need a higher thought to focus on (God’s word).

FASTING is another way that we can subject our bodies to what the Holy Spirit want to do with us. The Holy Spirit wants to bring discipline to our bodies, so we must allow him do his work in us.  As a preacher said “Fasting kills Lust” (Pst. Festus Agu)

PRAYER: Spend time praying in tongues for atleast 10mins, using the blood of Jesus your saviour to “…purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” Hebrew 9:14

4. Walk in the Light (The Power of Confession)

The greatest weapon sin has against you is secrecy. As long as your struggle is a secret, it has power over you.

James 5:16 says, “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” Notice it doesn’t just say “forgiven”—it says “healed.” Find a trusted, mature Christian friend or a mentor and tell them. Breaking the silence is often the moment the “spell” of the habit begins to break.

5. Grace for the Journey

If you fall, do not let the enemy convince you that God has left you. In John 8, when the woman caught in adultery was brought before Jesus, He didn’t condemn her. He protected her, and then He said, “Go and sin no more.”

His grace comes before our change, not after. If you stumble today, don’t run away from God in shame; run to Him in repentance. He is a Great High Priest who sympathizes with our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15).

PRAYER POINT: I pray for you that every spirit of masturbation that is trying to disgrace what God has started in your life and cause stagnation in your Christian journey and happiness, by the blood of Jesus Christ you are delivered now, in Jesus name, Amen.
