THE POWER OF WORDS AND HOW IT AFFECTS OUR LIVES

Have you ever said something in haste and immediately wished you could snatch the words back? Or perhaps you’ve been on the receiving end of a cutting remark that echoed in your mind long after it was spoken. We all know, deep down, that words carry weight. But do we truly grasp the immense power they wield over our lives, our relationships, and even our destiny? You become what you say overtime. Depressed words produce depression. Some people speak bad about marriages, but want a successful marriage. Some speak wrong about their career, but want a success in it. It does not work that way!

The Bible, a book filled with profound wisdom for living, has an astonishing amount to say about the tongue and the impact of our speech. It reveals that words aren’t just sounds or symbols; they are forces of creation and destruction, healing and wounding.

From the very beginning, God demonstrated the creative power of words. “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light” (Genesis 1:3, KJV). His spoken word brought the universe into existence! While our words don’t create planets, they certainly create atmospheres – in our homes, workplaces, and within ourselves.

The book of Proverbs repeatedly warns us:

  • “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” (Proverbs 18:21, KJV)

  • “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.” (Proverbs 15:4, KJV)

Think about that for a moment: death and life. Our words can tear down our self-esteem, destroy our reputation, or ignite conflict. Conversely, they can build confidence, offer hope, and foster reconciliation.

What kind of seeds are you planting with your words today?

Jesus Himself taught that our words are not superficial; they are direct windows into our inner selves.

  • “O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” (Matthew 12:34, KJV)

If our words reflect our thoughts, then we can transform our words. One way to transform our thoughts is by studying the word of God (Rom.12:2) and subjecting our whole daily experience to it.

What you think about: Success, love, fulfilment, purpose, goodness etc. should be guided by the principles of the Word of God.

By this, our words can be more seasoned for fruitfulness and positivity.

This isn’t about simply “policing” our words; it’s an invitation to examine our hearts and allow God to purify the source of our speech.

While the dangers of a negative tongue are clear, the Bible also celebrates the incredible potential of words to heal, uplift, and bring peace.

  • “Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.” (Proverbs 16:24, KJV)

  • “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” (Ephesians 4:29, KJV)

Imagine how our relationships, communities, and even our own mental well-being would transform if we intentionally chose to speak words that are “sweet to the soul” and “minister grace.” A sincere compliment, a word of encouragement to someone struggling, a heartfelt apology—these are like balm to wounded spirits.

The Apostle James famously describes the tongue as a small member that boasts great things, comparing it to a small rudder that steers a huge ship, or a tiny spark that sets a vast forest ablaze.

  • “For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” (James 3:7-8, KJV)

This sounds daunting, doesn’t it? If no man can tame the tongue, what hope do we have? The answer lies in seeking divine help. It’s a daily surrender to the Holy Spirit, asking Him to guard our mouths and transform our hearts.

Here’s the powerful truth: While we cannot tame it in our own strength, with God’s help, we can cultivate a conscious awareness of our speech and choose to align our words with His life-giving truth.

Our words are powerful. They create, they reveal, they heal, and they can destroy. Let us commit to being more mindful of the words we speak, remembering that each utterance is an opportunity to either build up or tear down, to bring life or to bring death.

By inviting God to transform our hearts by his Word and the activities of the Holy Spirit, we can slowly but surely begin to wield our tongues not as instruments of destruction, but as vessels of His grace, truth, and life.

PRAYER: Father, in the name of Jesus I received the quickening and strength to speak life into my daily experiences and relationships. That when I speak, many shall find hope and purpose. Halleluiah
